At Google I/O 2025, the company unveiled a new feature for Google Meet that utilizes its Gemini AI to provide real-time speech translation during video calls. This tool translates spoken language into the listener's preferred language while preserving the speaker’s original voice, tone, and expression. Initially, the feature supports English and Spanish, with plans to add Italian, German, and Portuguese in the coming weeks.

The translation functionality is currently available in beta and limited to subscribers of Google's AI Pro and AI Ultra plans, the latter priced at $249.99 per month. In a live demonstration, an English speaker and a Spanish-speaking colleague communicated seamlessly, with the AI providing real-time translations that maintained vocal nuances, enhancing the natural flow of conversation.

This development follows a broader trend of integrating AI into virtual meeting platforms, as seen with Microsoft Teams' earlier release of a similar translation tool. Google's addition of this feature to Meet underscores its commitment to enhancing communication tools through advanced AI capabilities.
